In a display of rapid and multi-department cooperation, a commercial building in North Amityville became the center of one determined firefight on Thursday night. According to News 12, the fire erupted around 10:30 p.m. on Albany Avenue, requiring the response of nine different departments, including aid from two Nassau County units. Amidst the havoc, environmental concerns peaked as the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation was summoned to address an unidentified substance leaking from within the building.
Yet, even as the community of firefighters banded together in the face of the nocturnal blaze, their safety was not assured. ABC7 NY reports that three individuals were injured, including two firefighters, when circumstances forced heroes in helmets to retreat as the warehouse roof came crashing down during the fire combat. An employee was among those checked for injuries at the scene, their conditions remaining minor fortunately.
The fire was complicated by efforts to contain an unknown chemical, adding an extra layer of risk for firefighters. Crews had to manage both the flames and potential chemical hazards within the structure.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and there is no confirmed source at this time. Those injured sustained minor injuries. Findings from the investigation will help prevent or reduce the impact of similar incidents in the future.
