North Carolina's proactive approach to industrial site development has caught the attention of businesses and periodicals nationwide, with Governor Josh Stein's administration leading significant investments in infrastructure. As reported by the Governor's Office, the state's Selectsite Readiness Program has been a pivotal force in preparing areas like Halifax County for economic growth, and such efforts have recently earned North Carolina the title of 2025 State of the Year by Business Facilities Magazine.
During his visit to the US 301 Industrial Site in Enfield, Governor Stein emphasized the importance of these development initiatives, stating, "We’re turning dirt into jobs all across the state by creating the conditions companies need to succeed." Representative Rodney Pierce highlighted the significance of these investments for the region: "This investment makes it clear that Halifax County and District 27 is open for business," as noted by the Governor's Office.
Halifax County has been strategically positioned to attract advanced manufacturing companies, thanks to its accessibility to interstate and railway systems, and close proximity to deep water ports. The Selectsite Readiness Program, launched in 2023, has provided the county with a $3 million grant to develop industrial sites poised for economic impact. The funding includes a $2.35 million grant from the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, supplemented by $650,000 in matching funds from the NC Department of Transportation for road improvements.
State transportation initiatives have been set in motion to support this growth, with NCDOT planning to upgrade Trestle Road for increased truck traffic. In a statement obtained by the Governor's Office, State Transportation Secretary Daniel Johnson echoed the commitment to infrastructure: "Access to good roads is one of the top factors industries consider when deciding where to locate."
This statewide development strategy has paved the way for North Carolina's economic accolades, including being named the 2026 Top State for Workforce Development by Site Selection Magazine. Following a record-breaking year, the state has announced more than 35,000 new jobs and over $24 billion in new investments in 2025, affirming its status as a top destination for businesses looking to expand or set up new operations.
