A tragic start to the New Year unfolded in North Dallas, where a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle, with the driver now facing serious charges. According to a WFAA report, the incident occurred late on New Year’s Day in the 10500 block of Stone Canyon Road, near Riverbrook Drive.

The vehicle hit a pedestrian around 11:15 p.m. last Thursday, and the victim was quickly taken to a local hospital by Dallas Fire-Rescue, tragically succumbing to their injuries later on. The driver, having apparently failed a field sobriety test, was arrested on an intoxication manslaughter charge. The Dallas Police Department disclosed that this investigation is still very much ongoing.

Residents of the normally tranquil street were left to confront the jarring scene outside their homes. "It makes you angry because it’s such an avoidable situation, and it’s just so selfish to do that," Quentin Mendoza expressed, per WFAA. A nearby missing-person sign intensifies local concern, as speculation mounts over whether the individual reported missing after not returning from a jog could be the crash victim, though police have yet to confirm the individual's identity.

Mendoza also mentioned having security footage that may show the victim wearing a headlamp, similar to that of the missing jogger. "They left for a jog in the neighborhood around 11 p.m. with the headlamp on, and the person in the video that I have is wearing a headlamp," he told WFAA. While this is the first fatal incident captured by the street's security cameras, residents recall numerous close calls at the same intersection in recent years.

Over at FOX 4 News, additional details emerge, confirming the victim's crossing of Stone Canyon Road and Riverbrook Drive around 11:30 p.m., shortly before the crash. The identity of the driver, who was taken into custody and charged, has not been made public, nor has the victim's.
