As North Georgia braces for a potentially perilous ice storm this weekend, state officials are already setting the wheels of preparedness in motion. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the incoming weather system could cause widespread disruptions with freezing rain leading to hazardous driving conditions and potential power outages. Temperatures are predicted to take a nosedive following a wet and warmer Wednesday, with precipitation expected to transition into a treacherous combination of ice, sleet, and snow by tomorrow night.
Local citizens, taking the forecasts to heart, have begun stockpiling basic necessities. "I got a lot of canned goods and tomato products to make a big pot of soup," Pat Turner shared in a statement obtained by Atlanta News First. Echoing the sentiment was Bethany Miller, who emphasized the importance of being ready for severe weather – from maintaining warmth to keeping the kids engaged indoors. Meanwhile, Gov. Brian Kemp used social media to urge residents to prepare, emphasizing the state's proactive measures in his video statement: "As always, our state team will be pretreating - preparing for the worst and hoping for the best."
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) isn't taking any chances and is positioning its arsenal. Nearly 500,000 pounds of salt-and-gravel mix and roughly 2 million gallons of brine stand at the ready, alongside more than 430 snow removal vehicles strategically placed across the state. With a wary eye towards ice, the most dastardly of wintry mix's cohorts, GDOT's prep work is a testament to lessons well-remembered and potentially harsh realities anticipated.
Communities are reflecting on past experiences, too, with some residents like Turner opting for caution. Their plans involve staying put, avoiding the chaos she encountered during the infamous "Snowmageddon" storm of 2014. "I had not been paying attention to the news, so I went to a party, and on the way home, I was stuck on I-20 for about 6 hours," she recalled in an interview with Atlanta News First.
