NV Energy and Nevada state investigators are in a dispute over overcharging customers. NV Energy says it will not pay back the full $65 million it overcharged over the past 20 years and plans to issue refunds only for charges after 2017, citing missing records before that year. The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada says the company has enough information to provide refunds going back to 2002, according to FOX5 Vegas.
NV Energy says it "deeply regrets the errors" and is "committed to providing meaningful compensation," but argues that only six months of refunds are necessary, claiming the PUC's rate-setting process prevented any windfall, as per KTNV. The company is challenging the commission’s authority to mandate full refunds, suggesting a potential legal dispute that could delay compensation.
Consumer advocates, including Garrity Pruitt of Utility Watch Nevada, demand full refunds and accountability, stating, "We deserve full refunds, clear answers, and assurances this won't happen again," as mentioned by KTNV. The PUC and the Attorney General's Bureau of Consumer Protection are seeking full refunds with interest and indefinite retention of billing records, while a public workshop is scheduled for January 21 to gather input from Nevada residents.
