Oak Cliff Cultural Center is currently showcasing a diverse collection of artworks in its OC3 Gallery with "Drawn to Life." The exhibition, which began on January 17 and will run through February 13, features the works of Tatyana Alanis, Chelsea Akpan, Raymond Butler, Dyemond Daniel, Christopher Machorro, Travis Oliver, and Raul Rodriguez. A reception that kicked off the event was held on the opening day from 6 to 8 pm.
The artists in "Drawn to Life" are dabbling in various media, such as illustration, sculpture, and screen printing, to express humor, nostalgia, and daily life's overlooked complexities. According to the event bulletin released by the City of Dallas, "Drawn to Life" presents "a colorful, expressive collection that celebrates personality, narrative, and reflects the many ways artists interpret the world around them."
Looking ahead, the cultural center has scheduled workshops and programs, including East African Dance and the "Carnaval in Bahia" event slated for February 14 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The latter will immerse attendees in Brazilian culture, featuring percussion, dance, and Capoeira Regional. Ondas Cultural and Movement Arts, which is known for bringing diverse and inclusive history to the North Texas community, will be facilitating the workshop.
Spring Break will also see the "That's Sew Creative" apparel camp from March 16–20, teaching fashion design and sewing to participants aged 8-12. Led by Chelita McDuffie, a prominent Dallas-based fashion entrepreneur, the camp promises a supportive setting to learn and create. McDuffie's Sew a Seed Foundation works to extend sewing education and creative career paths, especially for those in BIPOC communities. A showcase for the students' work is expected to punctuate the camp's conclusion, with each designer presenting their crafted two-piece outfit.
Additionally, the venue continues to foster literary arts with its "Moon Shadow Open Mic," a monthly series happening every second Wednesday. February's session, scheduled for the 11th at 7:00 PM, will be headlined by a featured poet, followed by community poets taking five-minute slots to share their works. Christopher Soden, a mainstay in the local literary scene, will be presenting the open mic night.
