Oakland's favorite scrappy punk festival, the Mosswood Meltdown, is returning this July with a lineup that promises to tear down the house. In what seems to be quickly becoming a tradition, John Waters, the cult filmmaker affectionately known as the "Pope of Trash," is set to hold court as the festival's master of ceremonies. As reported by SFGATE, the Baltimore native will be serving up his trademark wisecracking monologues between sets.
The big draw this year comes in the form of two punk rock heavyweights. Iggy Pop, frequently hailed as the "Godfather of Punk," and feminist punk rock trailblazers Bikini Kill are slated to headline the two-day event happening July 18-19. According to the The Press Democrat, tickets are going quickly at $179 for general admission weekend passes, with VIP options also available.
But let's not just solely fixate on the headliners. The festival's undercard is bursting with eclectic punk talent that promises to make any punk purist nod approvingly. Notably, Otoboke Beaver, described by Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl as "the most f—king intense s—t you've ever seen," according to a previous SFGATE report, and Santa Cruz hardcore staple Scowl are on the bill, set to pump up the crowd with their high-energy performances.
The 2026 festival also offers a unique twist with The Return of Jackie & Judy, a supergroup featuring Fred Armisen of "Portlandia" fame and members of Sleater-Kinney, who are ready to churn out Ramones covers in what's expected to be a nostalgic set dripping with punk's past glory. Tickets for this year's Meltdown, as well as the separately ticketed pre-party featuring indie legends Pavement, are up for grabs on the festival's website, as per details from The Press Democrat.
