A traffic stop in Oakley escalated into a multi-agency manhunt and subsequent standoff yesterday, leading to the apprehension of a suspect who allegedly fired at a deputy sheriff. According to the Contra Costa Sheriff's Office, the incident began around 10:50 AM when a deputy responding to a report of a restraining order violation initiated a traffic stop on the 4300 block of Gold Run Drive. The suspect, later identified as 54-year-old Raymond Smith, discharged several shots before fleeing on foot.
Residents were advised to strictly avoid the vicinity while law enforcement, including the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and other assisting agencies, conducted a strategic search for the suspect. According to a report by Hoodline, the police alerted the public through the CoCo Sheriff PIO Twitter account to steer clear of areas near the active search, including streets such as Gold Run Drive, Lariat Lane, and Placer Drive, where the suspect was eventually found barricaded in his home.
The standoff culminated after several hours when Smith apparently attempted to take his own life. He was treated on the scene by medical personnel before being taken to a local hospital. The Contra Costa Sheriff's Office has since disclosed that Smith will be booked on charges, including attempted murder of a peace officer, and encourages anyone with information to contact their office or leave an anonymous voice message.
A lockdown alert was sent out through the CoCoCWS, as revealed by Hoodline, instructing those near Neroly Road, Oakley Road, and Empire Avenue to immediately seek shelter and preserve emergency resources for life-threatening situations only.
