What Police Say Happened
The Oceanside Police Department said in a news release from the City of Oceanside that officers responded at approximately 7:19 PM. Preliminary information indicates a black Ford Mustang traveling eastbound on Oceanside Boulevard struck a man who was seated on the center median just east of College Boulevard.
The pedestrian, described only as an adult male, was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld until authorities can notify his family. The department said its Traffic Services Unit is handling the investigation.
Driver Cooperation And Call For Witnesses
Local outlets that republished the department's statement reported that the driver, an adult man, stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, and that there was no indication drugs or alcohol were a factor, according to the Times of San Diego. Investigators are working to piece together the full circumstances of the crash.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has video of the incident to contact the Oceanside Police Department at (760) 435-4769.
How This Fits Into The Region’s Safety Picture
The fatal crash happened in a busy commercial stretch of Oceanside Boulevard, a kind of arterial road that traffic safety advocates frequently flag as high risk for people on foot. SANDAG reports that the San Diego region averages more than 250 fatal crashes a year, and pedestrians are involved in roughly one-third of those incidents. Regional Vision Zero efforts aim to push those numbers down through redesigns, enforcement and education.
The San Diego Union-Tribune also reported on the collision, summarizing the Oceanside Police Department's preliminary account and timeline as the investigation continued.
