Oklahoma City Parks & Recreation will begin cleaning the Bricktown Canal on Tuesday, Jan. 20. Draining, cleaning, and refilling the canal is expected to take about three and a half weeks, depending on the weather, according to the City of Oklahoma City.
Parks teams will use small tractors, fire hoses, and other equipment to remove silt and debris. Employees from H.B. Parsons Fish Hatchery will help transport any live fish to the Oklahoma River.
The canal, last cleaned in January 2020, is more than 1 mile long and holds 3 million gallons of water with an average depth of 4½ feet. Built in 1999 as one of the original MAPS projects at a cost of $23 million, it has become a popular destination for both locals and visitors, as reported by the City of Oklahoma City.
