
An early morning collision on Thursday involving a semi-truck on the 10 Freeway in Ontario resulted in the death of one person and significant disruptions, as reported by KTLA. The incident, occurring near the 15 Freeway, led to the closure of westbound lanes after the tractor, carrying an excavator, struck the steel girders of an overpass bridge, causing a beam to fall onto the roadway below.
Following the initial crash, multiple vehicles collided with the fallen beam with one individual, subsequently pronounced dead at a local hospital the driver of the first vehicle struck by the beam was a woman who succumbed to her injuries, as reported by the NBC Los Angeles; additionally, a man sustained major injuries in the aftermath of the incident, which did not involve alcohol or drugs per the CBS News Los Angeles report.
The San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) was quoted by KTLA, stating, "As a result, steel beams were dislodged and shifted, and one fell onto the freeway below," framing the severity of the damage and aftermath that has caused ongoing travel disruptions in the area. The tractor's driver, a 50-year-old man from the city of Mira Loma, remained at the scene during the investigation and was not suspected of being under the influence, according to NBC Los Angeles.
Cleanup efforts, along with safety inspections and electrical repairs led by the SBCTA are active; they're working to restore the area and ensure safety for motorist passage beneath the compromised structure announced in the updates provided by the involved authorities, forcing motorists to confront massive delays throughout Ontario, and as of the last update provided by CBS News Los Angeles, the left lanes had reopened while the remaining lanes stayed closed without a clear estimate on reopening time. Motorists were advised by law enforcement to seek alternative routes during this time.
