Orlando's weather is set to take a dramatic turn as a strong cold front sweeps across east central Florida, the National Weather Service Melbourne FL has warned in its latest Area Forecast Discussion. Increased rainfall is on the horizon, moving in ahead of the chilly blast that's expected to bring a sharp decline in temperatures and a significant uptick in wind speeds. Gusty conditions, with winds veering northwest behind the front, are predicted to hit sustained speeds of 15 to 25 mph, and a Wind Advisory has been issued for the entire region.
Added to the blustery conditions, there's a 10% chance gusts could ratchet up to a whipping 50 mph, prompting officials to advise securing outdoor items and exercising caution. Temperatures quickly fall behind the front, with a return of well below-normal temperatures and bitter wind chills, the forecast discussion by the National Weather Service Melbourne FL states. As the mercury dips into the upper 20s to upper 30s overnight, Freeze Warnings and Cold Weather Advisories have also been placed into effect, underscoring the need for residents to wrap up warm and protect their properties against the frigid onslaught.
The cold snap won't be fleeting—going into Monday and Wednesday, an area of high pressure will set up shop across the southeast, indicating a dry stint and a continuation of cooler temperatures. However, the northwesterly winds should gradually shift northeast, but Orlando and its surrounding environs won't see a meaningful climb in thermometer readings until later in the week. Rain chances remain near zero Monday through Wednesday. The weather alert further details, encouraging residents to plan their days taking into consideration the unseasonal chill.
Boating along the Atlantic is facing a bout of hazardous conditions, too. The strong cold front is expected to make its presence known with winds of 15 to 30 knots and potential gale-force gusts, capable of kicking up seas up to 8 feet offshore. Small Craft Advisories have been widely disseminated, signaling the onset of quite unfavorable conditions for seafarers and pleasure boaters alike. As for aviation, there's an impending impact forecasted at Orlando's MCO airport—wind gusts could soar to at least 30 knots.
Fire weather conditions are also raising concern, as the robust frontal system, combined with the low humidity levels, has heightened the potential for wildfires in the area. The NWS Melbourne FL’s fire weather notice calls attention to winds of 15 to 25 mph and posits that gusts might reach formidable speeds—between 35 to 50 mph—having possible implications for any active or recently subsided fires.
