Orlando is gearing up for a significant change as it prepares to say farewell to the former Pulse nightclub, in a move to make way for a permanent memorial dedicated to the victims and survivors of the tragic 2016 shooting. Construction fencing is set to be installed around the site early next week, officials confirmed, signaling the beginning of the end for the building where 49 lives were cut short.
While the public will soon lose direct access to the temporary memorial due to the fencing, the ClickOrlando report informs us that a designated area will still be available for visitors who wish to leave flowers or pause for a moment of reflection during this transition period. Demolition of the structure is expected to commence in mid-March, once all necessary preparations are in place.
The upcoming changes were also echoed in the city's communication with WFTV, which explained that the demolition is a precursor to the establishment of a lasting tribute to the lives affected by the tragedy at Pulse. The city will host a public meeting on March 5 at 4 p.m. to provide updates on the design plans for the new memorial, welcoming both in-person and online attendance.
The collective memory of that fateful June night has permeated the community, and the proposed memorial seeks to encapsulate the spirit of those lost and the resilience of those who survived. “The design team will share a presentation that includes new renderings that advance the work of the Pulse Memorial Advisory Committee,” the city said in an email to Channel 9, in the statement obtained by WFTV.
