Early on Monday morning, over 120 firefighters from the Los Angeles City Fire Department battled a Major Emergency structure fire in Winnetka, managing to shield nearby residences from the blaze. The fire erupted in a two-story commercial building located on the 20200 block of West Sherman Way at approximately 5:10 AM. Initial units arrived to find heavy fire on the second floor, prompting an intense firefighting effort that spanned nearly two hours.
The rapid response included both offensive and defensive strategies. Firefighters attacked the flames from the inside while also setting up hose lines to guard an adjacent apartment complex mere feet away. However, the challenge of the situation escalated when part of the building collapsed thirty minutes into the operation, forcing some crews to transition to defensive actions; somehow, a catastrophe was averted.
Assistant Chief Justin Moore administered the effort, in which no significant injuries were reported, except for a 36-year-old woman who was treated for smoke inhalation. She, along with all residents of the neighboring apartment building, was spared from the direct threat thanks to effective firefighting and early evacuation assistance from a resident, Carl Scott. His efforts in warning his neighbors were specifically acknowledged by the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The second floor of the commercial building, while the first floor experienced significant water damage, prompted officials to red-tag four units due to stability concerns. The LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section (ACTS) has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the fire, true to protocol for incidents classified as Major Emergencies.
