Travelers at Dallas airports experienced significant disruption yesterday, with continued flight cancellations and delays due to severe winter weather conditions impacting North Texas. According to FOX 4 News, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) had more than 680 cancellations, and Dallas Love Field reported more than 80 cancellations by noon yesterday.
Stranded due to the flight cancellations, thousands of passengers found themselves grappling with the repercussions of the frigid temperatures. A ground delay issued at DFW Airport, as reported by The Dallas Express, averaged a hold-up of 228 minutes because of snow and ice, although all departures are expected to leave on time later.
American Airlines highlighted the "10 different unique weather conditions involving ice pellets, snow, and freezing rain" at DFW, revealing the challenges faced by the ground crew and operations, as obtained by FOX 4 News. This complex weather scenario resulted in frequent and dynamic changes, with weather conditions shifting 23 times in a single day.
The Federal Aviation Administration had to issue a ground stop until 9 a.m. on Monday, with the chance of freezing temperatures creating hazardous conditions that could extend the restriction, The Dallas Express reported. Particularly challenging "feels-like" temperatures plummeted to near minus 5 degrees, with risks of runways refreezing after sunset, making the travel treacherous for scheduled aircraft.
Major airlines, including American, Southwest, Delta, and United, responded to the chaotic weather by offering travel waivers, allowing passengers to change their flights without incurring extra fees. FOX 4 News reported that travelers wishing to cancel their trip entirely are entitled to a refund under federal law for any unused portion of their ticket, including bag fees and added extras like seat assignments.
The impact of the winter storm is far-reaching, with over 4,100 flights canceled nationwide on Monday morning as the adverse weather conditions gripped multiple states, as per the data from The Dallas Express. Amid this wide-scale disruption, travelers are encouraged to verify their flight status before heading to the airport and prepare for possible extended delays.
