In a recent development, deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff's Office apprehended a suspect in connection with the theft of Tesla electric vehicle charging units at multiple business locations. According to a press release issued by the Sheriff's Office, the suspect, identified as Seth Steven Lopez, a 40-year-old resident of Palm Desert, was taken into custody on December 31, 2025.
Investigations that stemmed from reported thefts on both December 10 and December 13, 2025, eventually led to locating Lopez. The arrest operation was jointly conducted by deputies from the Rancho Mirage Special Enforcement Team, Palm Desert Business District Team, and Robbery Burglary Suppression Team. They managed to swiftly arrest Lopez in the area of Bob Hope Drive and Sunrise Drive, Rancho Mirage, without any incident, marking a culmination of their efforts to apprehend the alleged thief.
Following Lopez's arrest, deputies executed a search warrant at a residence in the 75000 block of Orange Blossom Lane in Palm Desert, which was related to the investigation. "Lopez was arrested at booked at the John Benoit Detention Center for multiple counts of grand theft and petty theft," the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office detailed in their statement. The offenses are a serious breach, reflecting brazen attempts to profit from the burgeoning electric vehicle infrastructure.
The Sheriff's Office also issued an advisory for business owners with electric vehicle charging stations. They underscored the importance for proprietors to proactively secure their installations with measures including but not limited to functional security cameras, adequate lighting, protective enclosures, and robust alarm systems. They emphasized ensuring that all installations are performed by qualified personnel, a step meant to directly respond to and possibly preclude such thefts.
As the investigation continues, the Sheriff’s Office is reaching out to the community for additional information and is urging anyone who believes they might have been a victim of Tesla charging equipment theft, or who has information about the case to contact Deputy Cazee or Deputy Hindiyeh at the Palm Desert Sheriff’s Station.
