A Pittsburgh Police officer was injured in a vehicular crash while searching for a suspect. According to WPXI, the incident occurred just past midnight at Arlington Avenue and Josephine Street in the South Side Slopes neighborhood. The officer, who was alone in the patrol car, apparently lost control of the vehicle before it collided with a pole.
The injured officer was originally unresponsive but later regained consciousness and was able to speak with medics at the scene. Although no other individuals were involved in the crash, the officer was transported in stable condition to a local hospital for further evaluation. As per a routine procedure after such incidents, the officer is to undergo mandatory drug and alcohol testing. WTAE reported that there was no active pursuit in process when the accident happened.
Public safety officials were quick to confirm that the officer had been actively searching for a domestic violence suspect who had evaded police custody earlier. The search was being conducted last Sunday night into the early hours of Monday, during which time the crash took place. Further details on the suspect's search and whether it has been affected by the incident remain undisclosed at this time.
The Pittsburgh Police Department's Collision Investigation Unit has been summoned to thoroughly investigate the crash.
