A 19-year-old Pontiac man, Kqualin Isaac Douglas, has been charged with the murder of Cornelius Traves Murphy Jr., also 19, from Warren, marking Pontiac's first homicide in 2026. As reported by CBS News Detroit, Douglas was arraigned with charges including second-degree murder, tampering with evidence, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and using a gun in the commission of a felony. His bond was set at $300,000.
The incident, which occurred on January 7, led to a quick response from local authorities after a 911 call tipped them off about a man lying motionless in a field. Despite turning himself in early Monday morning, according to Mlive, Douglas is being held at the Oakland County Jail and police have since been able to not only identify the suspect but also gather substantial evidence for prosecution.
On January 8, police found Murphy dead from a chest gunshot wound on the 100 block of North Jessie Street in Pontiac. Douglas has been arrested in connection with the case and is in jail. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said, "I am proud of our team that began an investigation with nothing and through their diligence and professionalism were able to not only identify a suspect, but gather enough evidence that charges could be brought." He added, "We look forward to the justice system moving forward on this case on behalf of the victim, his family and the community," as stated by NewMediaDetroit.
