Portlanders should prepare for a wet week ahead, as the National Weather Service in Portland forecasts a steady parade of rain for the city. Temperatures are hovering in the low 50s, with a high near 51 degrees expected today, accompanied by a persistent south wind that could bring gusts as high as 25 mph. The chance of precipitation is pegged at 90%, ensuring a damp start to the week.
Tonight, the rain is likely to continue, primarily between 9 p.m. and midnight, with a chance of precipitation sitting at 60% and with not much relief in terms of rainfall less than a tenth of an inch possible although the temperature drops to a low around 40 degrees, the south wind will slow to a 5 to 8 mph whisper. Monday offers a brief respite, sporting a 30 percent chance of rain before 10 a.m. before giving way to partly sunny skies and a high near 48.
The National Weather Service also warns of rain later in the week; Tuesday carries an 80% chance of rain with new precipitation amounts between a quarter and half an inch possible, and by Tuesday night, the likelihood of rain achieves near certainty at 100%. Wednesday's forecast continues the trend, presenting an 80% possibility of more rain after 10 a.m. with a high near 45.
Overnight temperatures will generally linger in the high 30s throughout the week, with the rain-snow line hovering around 2100 feet on Monday night before dropping slightly in the following days, the forecast even suggests rain for Thursday with the snow level to steep down to 1900 feet, reinforcing the notion that winter still has a grip on the region, even as the calendar turns. Friday, however, hints at a slight chance of rain, offering hope for a drier weekend, although the skies will be mostly cloudy.
The forecast also indicates some reprieve by the weekend, with Saturday likely to see mostly cloudy conditions and a high near 49 degrees. Friday night could bring clearer skies, setting Portland up for a potentially dry Saturday, a contrast to the persistent rainfall earlier in the week.
