Raleigh residents and visitors will need to adjust plans as Pullen Park Amusements temporarily closes for shoreline improvements. According to an official announcement, all attractions—including rides and playgrounds—will be closed from February 2 through March 31. The closure allows for construction work around Lake Howell, with Raleigh Parks leading the effort to upgrade the aging infrastructure in the area.

While Pullen Park Amusements will be closed, the Pullen Aquatic Center, Community Center, and tennis courts will remain open to visitors. Most amusement areas are expected to reopen in April, with additional repairs continuing through August.

The project is necessary due to the deterioration of concrete shoreline walls and railings, which have affected the safety and structural stability of the Lake Howell area. The renovation includes demolishing and replacing nearly all existing shoreline structures, installing modern, sustainable walls, and reconstructing pathways to improve safety and accessibility. The dam at the east end of Lake Howell will remain unchanged, as it is currently in good condition.

In preparation for the project and to protect wildlife, the city has relocated fish from Lake Howell to secure habitats. During this week, aquatic residents were moved to the park’s two upper ponds. Once construction is complete, Lake Howell will be restocked with fish to restore the ecosystem. For safety, pathways around the lake will remain closed as Lake Howell begins to drain on January 19, marking the start of the shoreline renovation.
