A large fire broke out today at a tire shop in Queens, injuring nine people, including firefighters, children, and a pregnant woman. According to ABC7NY, the fire began around 4 a.m. and spread from the ground-level tire shop to the residential units above in an apartment building on Flushing Avenue in Ridgewood.

The firefighting effort was complicated by the nature of the blaze. FDNY Assistant Chief David Sims told ABC7NY that tire fires involve deep-seated burning, which continues even when water is applied. Despite the response of more than 120 FDNY and EMS personnel, challenges continued, leading to an exterior attack after a collapse at the rear of the building forced firefighters to leave interior operations.

Residents affected by the fire described their experiences. Robert Rodonis said that when he opened the door, smoke entered, prompting him to quickly grab belongings and evacuate, bringing the family’s dog and cat with him. Jesus Maldonado, the building manager, reported to CBS News that he ran to get his phone and called 911, noting that events unfolded rapidly. He also reported that two children and a pregnant woman were among those injured.

The American Red Cross is assisting around 30 people displaced by the fire, providing aid and support. While the investigation into the fire’s cause continues, building residents and local officials are awaiting the fire marshal’s findings, as reported by CBS News. All individuals who were injured, including four firefighters and five tenants, sustained minor injuries and are expected to recover fully.
