A 35-year-old woman was found with stab wounds at 400 West 47th Street in Hell's Kitchen on Wednesday, and John Carlos Mesa, a 26-year-old man, was found nearby with stab wounds, according to the NYPD. Both victims were taken to a hospital, and Mesa was pronounced dead at Morningside Hospital. NYPD took a person of interest into custody after the stabbings. John Carlos Mesa was publicly identified as the male victim, while the identity of the woman, the attacker, and any motive remain unknown to the public.
The stabbings were reported by FOX 5 New York, which cited NYPD information indicating the investigation is ongoing. Both victims were taken to Mount Sinai Morningside, which operates a state-verified Level 2 Trauma Center with round-the-clock trauma surgery teams equipped to handle severe multi-system injuries, according to Mount Sinai Health System. Another Knife Attack Occurred Just Over a Week Earlier
The crime scene is in Hell's Kitchen, within Manhattan Community Board 4, portions of whose district include the Theater District and Restaurant Row, according to Manhattan Community Board 4 — a stretch of Midtown West that has seen repeated knife violence in recent months.
Just eight days before Wednesday's stabbing, on September 1, a 45-year-old man was slashed in the neck outside a deli at 10th Avenue and West 52nd Street in Hell's Kitchen, according to Midtown Patch. No suspect was immediately taken into custody in that earlier incident, and it remains unclear whether investigators see any connection between the two cases. A Violent Stretch for Hell's Kitchen
A separate knife attack was also reported in nearby Times Square. Earlier in the summer, on July 23, two men were stabbed in the back during an overnight confrontation on Eighth Avenue near West 46th Street, with two suspects fleeing west on West 46th Street afterward.
In April, a pre-dawn double stabbing near 791 Ninth Avenue in Hell's Kitchen on April 23 left Rene Flores dead and a second man injured, resulting in murder charges against a 35-year-old Bronx man, according to News 12 Bronx. That victim, identified as Rene Flores, died from multiple torso stab wounds. The building where Wednesday's stabbing occurred is at 400 West 47th Street.
