A rabies alert has been issued for the St. Cloud area in Osceola County, Florida, after a domestic cat was euthanized last Saturday due to confirmation of the virus. According to WFTV, the Florida Department of Health in Osceola County (DOH-Osceola) put the alert into effect yesterday and will keep it active for 60 days to monitor the presence of rabies among local wildlife.
The specific boundaries of the rabies alert include Lakeshore Boulevard from the 1500 block east to the northern boundary, Fertic Road as the southern boundary, Old Hickory Tree Road to the east, and Wisconsin Avenue to the west. In light of the confirmation, DOH-Osceola urges the public to be vigilant, as rabies can be nearly 100% fatal in humans when untreated, ClickOrlando reported.
Residents and visitors in the affected area are advised to take specific precautions to prevent rabies exposure. These include immunizing pets and livestock based on a veterinarian's advice, keeping animals under direct supervision and confined to your property, avoiding contact with stray and wild animals, and never adopting wild animals or bringing them into homes. In the event of an animal scratch or bite, immediate medical attention should be sought, and the incident reported to DOH-Osceola at 407-742-8606.
In addition, the health department recommends ensuring that wildlife, such as bats, cannot enter living spaces where they might find themselves in contact with people and pets. Those who come across stray animals are encouraged to contact local animal control or Osceola Animal Services at 407-742-8000 to have the animals safely removed from the neighborhood.
