Raleigh authorities report an incident in which 57-year-old Ravenscroft School teacher Zoe Welsh was killed during a violent home break-in last Saturday morning. Authorities responded to Welsh’s home on the 800 block of Clay Street, near Fred Fletcher Park, just before 6:35 a.m., CBS 17 reports. They found her with severe head injuries. Welsh, a mother and a member of Ravenscroft Upper School’s Science Department, was taken to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Police have identified and arrested 36-year-old Ryan Camacho in connection with Welsh’s death. He faces charges of murder and felony breaking and entering, according to his arrest warrant. Neighbors expressed shock at the violent crime in their normally quiet neighborhood, with one resident describing the incident as “devastating” and “shocking,” as reported by ABC11.
According to 6ABC, Welsh called 911 to report an intruder in her home but was attacked while still on the line with the dispatcher. Ravenscroft School described her as a “beloved colleague and friend” and said grief counseling and support resources will be available to faculty, staff, and students starting Monday.
Raleigh Police Chief Rico Boyce expressed condolences to Welsh’s family and noted the community’s shared grief, telling ABC11, “Whenever there is a loss of life in our community, it affects us all.” He added that the arrest of the suspect demonstrates that criminal acts will not be tolerated in Raleigh. Camacho is being held in Wake County Jail and is scheduled for his first court appearance in Wake County District Court. The investigation remains ongoing.
