A usually quiet Rancho Cordova street turned into a full-scale law-enforcement scene today after a wave of 911 calls reported gunfire and one caller warned they were setting "booby traps" in the neighborhood.
The first report came in as shots fired near Copper Sunset Way, prompting deputies to rush to the area. According to ABC10, a second caller then told dispatchers they had fired the shots and were actively setting up booby traps, which quickly escalated the response. The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office confirmed that multiple units flooded the scene while investigators moved in to secure the area.
Booby traps carry steep legal penalties
Under California law, assembling, placing or maintaining a booby trap is not a prank, it is a potential felony that can bring multi-year prison sentences and steep fines, legal experts note. Cal Criminal Defense Lawyers details how state statutes can be used to prosecute anyone who sets or possesses devices designed to maim or kill.
Investigation ongoing; authorities seeking tips
The sheriff's office has not released full information about possible arrests or injuries and says the investigation is still active, according to ABC10. Officials are asking anyone with information to contact the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office and to steer clear of the area while deputies and technicians check for and secure any potential hazards.
Why this matters
Law-enforcement officials warn that booby traps are unpredictable and can just as easily injure neighbors, kids or first responders as any intended target. Similar setups have proved deadly elsewhere. Reporting from WSAW describes a 2025 case in which a rigged device killed a man checking on a relative's vacant home, underscoring the very real danger investigators face whenever a 911 call includes a threat of booby traps.
