The station reported that the climber needed urgent extraction and medical care, and that a Fresno County Sheriff's Office helicopter rescue technician assisted the aerial rescue team before the injured man was transported to an ambulance. A video shared on social media by the California Highway Patrol showed the extraction in progress, though NBC Los Angeles noted the climber's identity and condition were not known at the time of its report.

The operation to reach the fallen climber was far from routine. Per Paso Robles Daily News, CHP Coastal Division Air Operations dispatched Helicopter-70 from its Paso Robles Airport base at approximately 12:45 p.m. Friday, following a mutual-aid request from CHP Central Division Air Operations. The crew traveled from the airport base to reach the remote Sierra Nevada cliff.
The same outlet detailed the mechanics of the extraction: rescuers lowered a Fresno County Sheriff's Office helicopter rescue technician via cable hoist onto the 700-foot vertical rock face to secure the climber before hoisting him off the wall. Hoist extractions of this kind are considered high-risk maneuvers, deployed specifically when steep terrain makes it impossible for a helicopter to land nearby.
Why Power Dome Is a Known Hazard
Power Dome itself is a vertical rock formation in Helms Canyon near Courtright Reservoir, according to Mountain Project. The reservoir sits in the southwestern Sierra Nevada. Climbers know the formation for multi-pitch friction routes with long, sparse protective bolting — commonly called runouts — on routes rated up to 5.10 in difficulty. A runout means a climber can travel far above their last anchor point, increasing the potential fall distance if something goes wrong.
The exact cause of Friday's fall has not been disclosed, and it remains unclear whether an equipment or anchor failure was involved.

The Power Dome rescue is the latest example of how backcountry emergencies in the Sierra Nevada depend on coordination between local law enforcement, volunteer search-and-rescue teams, and state aviation units. Fresno County covers more than 6,000 square miles, with terrain ranging from Central Valley flatlands at 300 feet elevation to Sierra Nevada peaks topping 14,000 feet, according to the Fresno County Sheriff's Office. Just weeks earlier, on August 22, the same crew performed a technical hoist rescue that pulled two stranded climbers one by one off a 600-foot cliff chute near Big Sur's Hurricane Point. That operation also relied on H-70's hoist system to reach climbers stranded on sheer vertical terrain, showing the crew's growing track record with these extractions.
