Over three decades ago on January 27, 1991, hikers stumbled upon a grisly scene in Palomares Canyon, Alameda County: the charred remains of a woman, her identity obscured by the violence of her death and the passage of time, but the cold case unit is shining a new light on this mystery, as recently detailed in a social media post from the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.
In 2007, a major breakthrough in the case came when a relative recognized a ring engraved with the initials “O.M.L.” on the Doe Network, a website dedicated to identifying missing and unidentified persons. After years marked by uncertainty and quiet despair, DNA testing ultimately confirmed the woman’s identity as Vicenta Turcios Sanchez-Orellana. She lived with her husband and children on 38th Avenue in Oakland and had left for work that day, never to return. Her life was cut short, leaving behind a grieving family and a mystery that endures.
Decades later, Sanchez-Orellana’s case remains unsolved. The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office continues to seek the public’s help, stressing that any tip could be crucial in bringing justice and long-awaited closure to her family. Anyone with information is urged to come forward by contacting the Sheriff’s Office at (510) 667-3661, or by leaving an anonymous tip at (510) 667-3622.
