This morning, Southern Marin Fire District crews raced to extinguish a blaze that erupted in a Sausalito apartment building at 14 Josephine Street. Embers took hold two stories beneath the street level, in a unit of a unique three-story structure, carved into the hillside. The fire demanded immediate action, and first responders from Sausalito Engine 1 were met with severe fire conditions upon arriving at the scene, as detailed by Southern Marin Fire District's official announcement.
Despite the terrain's challenge, with its demanding incline crews managed both to douse the flames shortly after their 9:15 AM water application and to search for anyone caught in the grip of the inferno, gaining control over the fire by 9:34 AM; the firefighting operation was thus significantly impeded by the steep hillside, yet they overcame these hurdles to mitigate the potential for disaster. The logistics of the response, as detailed in the report, involved two alarms and support from various neighboring agencies, including Marin County Fire, Central Marin Fire, Tiburon Fire, San Rafael Fire, and Kentfield Fire, bringing together 15 fire apparatus and 30 firefighters to tackle the emergency.
Fortunately, no physical injuries were reported, despite the severity of the fire and the complex nature of the building's architecture; however, several residents now find themselves homeless. The response team's efforts extend beyond the extinguishing of flames, as they partner with the American Red Cross to provide support for those who the fire has displaced. Even as the flames have been subdued, the fire's origin remains under scrutiny with investigators actively dissecting the scene, voicing early suspicions that the cause was accidental.
