A new weekly tradition is taking root in downtown Santa Rosa. The Wanderlust Food Truck Festival opened Thursday at Old Courthouse Square, bringing 15 to 20 food trucks, live music, bounce castles and face painting to the plaza for what organizers say will become a recurring Thursday evening gathering from 5 to 9:30 p.m.
The inaugural lineup included a wide mix of cuisines, according to The Press Democrat, with vendors like World Famous Corndogs, Kona Ice, Costas Tacos, Stickee Eats serving Lao cuisine, Momo Man offering Himalayan and Indian food, and Tri Tip Trolley dishing out sandwiches and sliders. Trucks selling pizza, pancakes and lemonade rounded out the opening night spread, and the festival is also offering beer and wine from the team behind the Wednesday Night Market. A Facebook page was also mentioned ahead of the opening.
A New Thursday Gathering
The festival's Thursday debut comes shortly after the Wednesday Night Market, a 37-year tradition that recently concluded after a 14-week summer run that drew an estimated 7,000 to 9,000 visitors per night. Wanderlust now offers another downtown gathering on a different night of the week.
Christine Busby, in an Aug. 28 email, said the new festival creates a place for people to meet friends, bring families, discover food and spend an evening together. The Sonoma County series is designed to give families, coworkers and visitors another reason to spend Thursday evenings downtown, and organizers describe it as an effort to bring Wanderlust's community gathering model to Santa Rosa.
A Plaza Built for the Crowd
Old Courthouse Square itself has a long civic history that predates any food truck. The land was donated to Sonoma County in 1854 when Santa Rosa was named the county seat, and it served as the seat of local government for 82 years before the original courthouse was demolished in 1966, according to the City of Santa Rosa. The 1884 courthouse building was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake before the site underwent a reunification project completed in 2017, which removed a roadway that had bisected the park since 1967 and created the single public plaza — framed by granite steps from the historic 1908 courthouse — that now hosts weekly street events.
The plaza has also served as a gathering point for other kinds of downtown events. Old Courthouse Square was a primary staging ground for the No Kings 3 demonstrations in March, underscoring the square's role as downtown Santa Rosa's default public gathering space regardless of the occasion.
Part of a Bigger Downtown Push
Wanderlust's Thursday festival lands amid a broader city effort to pull more foot traffic into downtown Santa Rosa. It coincides with Ross Street Live, a 12-week pilot pedestrian activation running August 7 through October 31 on nearby Ross Street that features lunchtime food trucks, weekend concerts and Sunday artisan markets, a program Hoodline covered in its summer report on the pedestrian block party. The city closed the Ross Street block to vehicular traffic specifically to boost foot traffic, part of a wider trend toward pedestrian-centric food and music events downtown.
For entertainment, organizers included live music alongside the food trucks.
Beyond Santa Rosa: A Growing Regional Operator
The Sonoma County debut is the latest stop for an organization that has been building out a network of recurring food truck gatherings across multiple states. Beyond its expansion into Sonoma County, the Wanderlust Food Truck Festival operates a multi-state footprint of mobile food events across California, Nevada and Pennsylvania, including a weekly gathering launched at Palm Springs' Sunrise Park in June 2026, according to the Gay Desert Guide. The Cali Curbside Crave material also mentions a monthly Menifee Foodie Fridays event.
Why Trucks Prefer Organized Events
All mobile food vendors participating in public events in Sonoma County must hold a valid Mobile Food Facility permit issued by the county's Department of Health Services Environmental Health division under the California Retail Food Code, per Sonoma County Department of Health Services guidelines.
Food-truck operators also have to account for event logistics when setting up for an evening. That's part of why operators like Wanderlust favor organized, recurring event markets over individual street parking — event markets help coordinate the logistics of an evening gathering.
Wanderlust's stated mission centers on supporting independent food businesses while creating gathering places in local communities, offering a changing mix of local and regional cuisines each week. With the Wednesday Night Market's season behind it and Ross Street Live running through the end of October, downtown Santa Rosa now has food trucks, live music and pedestrian activity spread across multiple nights of the week heading into fall.
