A 33-year-old convicted felon was apprehended by Seattle police for drug dealing in the Belltown area on a Wednesday. In an incident that unfolded in broad daylight, officers witnessed a man, later identified as the suspect, allegedly completing a drug transaction at around 10 a.m. on the 2200 block of 3rd Avenue. According to the SPD Blotter, the suspect hastily concealed items believed to be narcotics into his pants as officers looked on.
The account continues as police stopped and detained the purchaser after a brief vehicle pursuit, at which point the officers retrieved $60 worth of crack cocaine—the substance bought from the suspect. The Seattle PD also enlisted the aid of the Real Time Crime Center, which provided video footage of the illegal exchange, subsequently utilized as evidence in the ongoing investigation.
As the operation progressed, officers confronted and arrested the alleged dealer, who was still in the vicinity of the original sighting. The suspect, a recurrent figure in local narcotics dealings, denied possession of any further drugs. However, upon being booked into King County Jail, officials were tipped off by arresting officers about the potential of additional concealed narcotics. In a revelation that compounded the man's woes, a secondary search at the jail uncovered 53 baggies of narcotics secreted in the suspect's underwear, totaling 13.6 grams of crack cocaine, alongside $121 in cash.
The Seattle Police Department's Narcotics Unit has since been tasked with further investigation into the matter. The suspect's previous history with law enforcement and the nature of the crime recurrent in a familiar location speak to a broader, more systemic challenge faced by the community and law enforcement in combating street-level drug sales.
