Seattle is bracing for the second year of what has become the largest highway preservation effort in Washington state, as the Revive I-5 project proceeds with major construction slated to kick off the weekend of January 9-12. In a report by WSDOT, travelers are cautioned to prepare for temporary full closure of northbound Interstate 5 in Seattle for construction of the Ship Canal Bridge work zone. Significant impacts are expected, as the I-5 express lanes will be transitioning to northbound only traffic around the clock.

With the multi-year effort to revitalize both the structural integrity and surface of the Ship Canal Bridge, local transit and transportation agencies are coordinating their efforts to minimize regional disruptions. This is happening due to, and on account of the lane reductions, which will be in effect until early June, with a pause for the World Cup matches in Seattle. Secretary of Transportation Julie Meredith urged alternate travel strategies, stating, "We're asking everyone to consider choosing alternate routes, carpooling, adjusting travel times or using transit to help keep everyone moving," as reported by WSDOT.

Leaders from agencies such as WSDOT, the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), and Sound Transit have assured the public of their commitment to maintaining a reliable flow of traffic throughout the construction. Angela Brady from SDOT highlighted the importance of staying informed and leveraging public transit: "SDOT monitors the city’s transportation network 24/7, helping keep buses frequent and reliable while also maintaining emergency access." Likewise, Sound Transit CEO Dow Constantine emphasized close partnerships to facilitate commutes, and Metro deputy general manager Ernest Kandilige affirmed their role in providing "safe, clean, reliable transit," as detailed in the WSDOT announcement.

As construction commences, WSDOT is taking advantage of the express lanes, setting them to northbound only to balance the regional traffic during this period of renovation. This decision implies that the usual southbound express lanes during morning hours will now be redirected to accommodate northbound travelers exclusively. While the city prepares itself for the associated traffic delays, WSDOT encourages the use of real-time travel information from its mobile app and the WSDOT Travel Center Map.

Nevertheless, the overall construction efforts will take a hiatus during the FIFA World Cup matches that Seattle will host from June 8 through July 10, providing temporary relief to daily commuters and travelers. Post-World Cup, the city will then see additional long-term lane closures through the end of the year, as per the ongoing plan to restore the vitality of this crucial infrastructure. The public is urged to remain adaptable and informed, turning to transit alternatives and planning for travel in what promises to be another demanding year for the I-5 corridor.
