Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) has put forth an ambitious plan to address the nationwide housing affordability crisis with his latest initiative, "The Path Home: Rebuilding the American Dream and Restoring Housing Affordability." The senator's roadmap was unveiled with the intent to increase the supply of homes, accelerate construction, and make housing more accessible, especially for working individuals. Alongside its unveiling, Gallego's strategy has garnered widespread support from various quarters, signaling a positive start to addressing a longstanding issue.
Arizona's Governor Katie Hobbs expressed her gratitude towards Senator Gallego for the comprehensive nature of the plan, highlighting the alignment with the Arizona Promise and stating, "Housing affordability is central to the Arizona Promise, and I’m thankful for Senator Gallego for putting forward this comprehensive plan for renters and homebuyers across the country." The governor also remarked on the actions already initiated by Arizona, which include expansion of homebuyer assistance, investments in energy-efficient upgrades, and aid for homeless veterans. Echoing Hobbs, Attorney General Kris Mayes recognized the plan's potential to address rent setting issues exacerbated by algorithmic practices, a problem her office confronted through litigation.
Local leaders have shown equivalent enthusiasm for the senator's proposal. Phoenix Housing Director Titus Mathew, Tucson Mayor Regina Romero, and Flagstaff Mayor Becky Daggett all conveyed support in statements cited by Gallego's press release, mentioning the critical role this plan could play in increasing housing units and ensuring the availability and affordability of homes in their cities. Romero highlighted the importance of federal partnership: "We need partners in Washington who understand what cities are facing."
This sentiment of collaboration is reflected at the national level too, with the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) commending the plan for its attention to fair wages in housing construction. The Real Estate Roundtable, through its President and CEO Jeffrey D. DeBoer, noted, "Senator Gallego is right to focus on the lack of housing supply as the leading cause of the nation’s housing crisis." Their statements, along with those of other professionals and organizations like the National Coalition for the Homeless and Up for Growth Action, signify a broad consensus on the need for such federal measures in combatting housing issues.
The National American Indian Housing Council (NAIHC) also praised the comprehensive nature of Gallego's plan, with Executive Director Rudy Soto acknowledging the necessity of including Tribal housing in the nationwide affordability strategy, "His call to reauthorize NAHASDA and reduce regulatory barriers at the federal level reflects a clear understanding of what Native communities need to build and sustain quality, affordable housing." As the housing plan attracts a wide spectrum of support, it becomes apparent that the need for decisive action on housing transcends local boundaries and calls for unified efforts at all levels of government.
