In a statement released on January 13th, North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis expressed satisfaction over the recent USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) State Committee appointments for North Carolina, recognizing five agricultural leaders chosen to guide the farming community in his state, as reported by Senator Tillis's office. Tillis highlighted the breadth of experience the nominees bring, as each individual appointed comes from a substantial background in farming and agricultural management. "North Carolina’s farmers and producers deserve leaders who understand agriculture from the ground up, and these appointees bring decades of real-world experience to the board," he stated.

The FSA State Committee, which oversees various agricultural programs and policies, comprises three to five individuals who serve as the local representatives for federal-level decision-making in agriculture; they are integral for the fair and efficient delivery of USDA programs that strengthen rural communities and support the agricultural economy, the committee's function aligns with the strategic distribution of farm-related aid and program management, aiming to offer stability to the agricultural sector, a field that despite its bucolic imagery routinely endures the volatility of weather market fluctuations, and policy changes.

To fill these influential roles, the appointed members include Jeffrey Claybourne Lee as chair. His farming expertise lies in tobacco, sweet potato, and cotton production utilizing sustainable practices, and he has previously contributed his knowledge as a member of the state committee. Steve Leggett Griffin, also joining the committee, manages a diversified crop and farming operation in Washington, NC. Adding to the esteemed appointees, Joseph Brent Leggett, a diversified row crop farmer, alongside Richard Paul Renegar who diversifies his agricultural efforts with beef cattle, farm equipment sales, and agritourism joins the committee; and lastly, Faylene Whitehead Whitaker co-founder of a family operation that ventures beyond traditional farming into agritourism and equipment sales, is also returning to provide her expertise to the state committee, as per Senator Tillis's office.
