In Slidell, Mayor Randy Fandal took the stage for his inaugural State of the City Address, detailing a vision for the city's future growth and infrastructure. Hosted at the East St. Tammany Business Alliance Luncheon in the Slidell Auditorium, his focus was on tangible achievements in his first three months of office and upcoming projects. CEO Russell Richardson of the St. Tammany Economic Development Corporation also updated attendees on new developments for the parish.
According to a public statement from the City of Slidell's post, one major announcement from Mayor Fandal includes the city's plans to purchase and rejuvenate the Slidell Bantam Baseball Association (SBBA) ballfields. The investment is bolstered by a private source, who has committed between 7 and 8 million USD to turf and modernize the fields, positioning Slidell to become a hub for regional tournaments, enhancing both recreation for residents and local economic activity.
Another significant move in the city's strategy is the ongoing negotiations to transform a financial burden into an economic asset. The Slidell Business Center on Robert Road – once a DISA building – is planned to be purchased by a large corporation, opening the door to new business opportunities in the area. Similarly, Mayor Fandal highlighted the revitalization of the Northshore Square Mall corridor, with Acquistapaces having acquired portions of the mall, aimed at putting the location back in business.
Cleaner neighborhoods and better drainage were also on the roster of improvements. The city has targeted drainage issues citywide, recently completing the removal of an "8 foot wall of mud" that had impacted drainage on Gause Boulevard. Efforts to reduce litter and take on blighted properties are also in the works, "because a clean city is a safer city," according to the mayor's remarks. Additionally, plans to connect the Tammany Trace to Heritage Park seem promising, with negotiations with Norfolk Southern about the defunct rail line, alongside the development of a new trailhead on Pennsylvania Avenue for community engagement through markets and events, according to the City of Slidell.
Fandal's address indicates a measured and forward-moving approach to municipal governance, with investments that seem to strike a balance between public benefit and prudent financial planning. As the strategies unfold, Slidell residents may soon see the fruits of these efforts in the form of improved city facilities, cleaner public spaces, and a thriving local economy. Further details about these and other city initiatives are expected to be released in the near future.
