The Southern Nevada Health District will offer free diabetes self-management and education classes in English and Spanish starting January 21. In Clark County, about 12.8% of adults, or 238,000 people, had diabetes in 2023. Nationwide, more than 41 million Americans have diabetes, including 11.7 million who do not know they have it. The classes provide information on managing the condition, as reported by 8 News Now.
Dr. Cassius Lockett, District Health Officer, said, "Diabetes is a serious and growing health challenge that affects not just individuals, but entire families and communities," pointing out that around 816,000 Nevadans are at risk of type 2 diabetes, with limited access to healthy food increasing their risk, according to the Southern Nevada Health District. To help, the Southern Nevada Health District is offering free diabetes self-management classes led by trained health educators and approved by the American Diabetes Association.
"The good news is that with the right education, support and tools, people can prevent complications and take control of their health, which is why these free classes are so important," Dr. Lockett added. In-person classes are scheduled in Las Vegas on January 21, 22, 28, and 29, while virtual sessions via Microsoft Teams will be held on January 22, 29, and February 5, with registration available by phone, email, or online.
