St. Augustine's beloved Bridge of Lions has once again stepped into the social media spotlight with this week’s St. Augustine Snapshot. The City of St. Augustine - Government took to Facebook to unveil the snapshot's location, which features the iconic bridge, a star of the town's skyline and a piece of the National Register of Historic Places.
Infusing a bit of local history into their reveal, the city's post points out that the Bridge of Lions isn't just photogenic—it's steeped in a narrative originating from a generous gift by Andrew Anderson. "The two marble Medici lions standing guard at the entrance were a gift from Andrew Anderson, the builder of the nearby Markland House," the post by the City of St. Augustine - Government detailed, giving props to the man who sought to forever imprint his legacy into the city’s foundations.
The bridge is more than just a way to literally connect two points over water; it symbolically bridges the present to the past, honoring both the Mediterranean roots of those regal lion statues and the early 20th-century American ingenuity. With the Bridge of Lions being a prominent fixture since the 1920s, its resonance with the community is palpable, routinely serving as a backdrop for countless photographs and memories.
City officials were hoping to engage locals with their Snapshot series, and responses to the post suggest success. Residents were quick to chime in on Facebook, some boasting their correct guesses, others expressing their fondness for this piece of St. Augustine heritage.
