A former St. Charles County bartender has plead guilty to possessing child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and installing hidden cameras to capture illicit footage in a residential setting. Anthony Thomas, 49, admitted to the receipt of child pornography and to setting up concealed devices in the private spaces of a home, one camouflaged as a smoke detector in a bedroom and the other disguised as an outlet extension in a bathroom, secretly recording a 14-year-old girl, the U.S. Attorney's Office, Eastern District of Missouri confirmed.

The investigation that ensnared Thomas took root in December 2024 when agents from Homeland Security Investigations were tipped off to someone in St. Charles County distributing CSAM over the BitTorrent network. Following a search sanctioned by the court at Thomas' home, officials discovered multiple electronic devices riddled with thousands of media files, some indubitably cataloging child sexual abuse and others containing materials where the depicted individuals’ ages remain ambiguous.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Thomas' guilty plea comes as a part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched in May 2006 aimed at curtailing the widespread problem of child exploitation. Federal, state, and local resources have been harnessed through this program to enhance coordination in locating and prosecuting internet-based exploiters of children, as well as aiding victims.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Hayes, who is prosecuting the case, highlighted the importance of interagency cooperation. The breakthrough in this instance was the result of joint efforts between Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations and the St. Charles County Regional SWAT Team.
