Lt. Sarah McCarthy, a long-serving member of the St. Charles County Ambulance District (SCCAD), was honored with a funeral procession featuring a fleet of emergency vehicles. McCarthy, who passed away after a medical emergency during her service, dedicated 23 years to the district and was promoted to lieutenant in 2016 in recognition of her commitment. The motorcade, which included ambulances, fire trucks, and police vehicles, traveled to the Cathedral Basilica for her funeral mass on Dec. 17, according to a release from St. Charles County.
McCarthy’s contributions were honored with flags flown at half-staff, reflecting the respect she earned throughout her career. Beyond her professional achievements, she devoted time to philanthropic efforts, mentoring young paramedics, volunteering on mission trips, and participating in the STARS program to support children with special medical needs. Rob Wylie, St. Charles County Assistant Director of Administration, told St. Charles County that she was not only “excellent in paramedic skills” but also demonstrated deep compassion.
Her dedication was reflected in Wylie’s recollections, noting her consistent follow-ups with patients after calls. He also described her as gregarious with a dry sense of humor, qualities recognized by both colleagues and the community.
McCarthy’s death followed a series of medical emergencies. On Nov. 21, 2025, she experienced chest tightness at SCCAD Station 12, prompting a hospital visit and emergency surgery. After suffering a stroke on Dec. 4, 2025, she passed away with her family at her side.
After services at the Cathedral Basilica, Sarah McCarthy was laid to rest at Bellerive Gardens Cemetery in Creve Coeur.
