In a turn of events that seems more suited to a cartoon than County Road 13, the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office (SJSO) had to respond to an unusual call last week involving a runaway emu. According to a social media post by the SJSO, Cpl. Keisler had quite the ordeal trying to apprehend the flightless bird, which proved to be quite defiant – ignoring commands and unleashing several kicks with its large talons before ultimately being caught.
The pursuit of the emu inevitably turned into a short chase, with Cpl. Keisler evading kicks from the emu's powerful legs before managing, to corner the emu and detain it using a makeshift lasso while also handcuffing the bird's legs to neutralize the threat posed by its talons. "In my 25 years, I've never handcuffed an emu," Cpl. Keisler said in the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office's post, indicating the unique nature of this pursuit.
Cpl. Keisler's efforts were focused on bringing the emu into custody without causing any harm to the animal, an objective he seemingly achieved as the post confirmed. After the successful capture, the emu was safely reunited with its owners, marking a serene ending to an eventful escapade.
The ordeal with the emu has garnered a fair amount of attention, likely due, to the absurdity of law enforcement chasing down a large bird — something straight out of a scene from an animated comedy. The creature's escapade has come to a close with the SJSO confirming that all criminal charges against the emu were dropped, allowing the bird to return home without any record of its brief stint on the run.
