The City of St. Louis Department of Human Services is keeping its Code Blue level 4 fully operational through tomorrow morning, ensuring that the increased provision of more than 600 emergency shelter beds will continue to shield the city's most vulnerable from winter's harsh embrace.
This extension follows a period beginning January 23 during which these additional beds have been made available, and, importantly, throughout the level 4 activation, the city has not yet seen these resources fully utilized. It’s a reminder that in moments of extremity, humanity must sometimes extend itself not just to meet the present, but to anticipate the needs still articulating themselves in the savage winters of our discontent. Walk-up shelter services are up and running, ready for those in dire need of refuge, according to the City of St. Louis.
As the evening's chill approaches, those in need of transport to these shelters are informed that they can be picked up between 5 and 7 p.m. at designated rally point locations. The exact details of these locations can be accessed through the city's human services webpage or contacting the United Way 211 Helpline by simply dialing 211.
The extension of Code Blue level 4 is a clear indication that the City of St. Louis recognizes the ongoing risks posed by the winter season. And while the availability of emergency beds is a critical component of the response, equitable access to those resources remains paramount. Thus, transportation accessibility, remains a vital element of the city's strategy toward ensuring those at risk can find their way to safety.
