Vanderpool, who has helmed Michigan's fourth-largest city since 2004, will contribute his expertise to the MME—a professional association that supports municipal executives across Michigan. In this role with the MME, Vanderpool is bringing his experience from managing Sterling Heights' administration, which consists of over 800 employees, 140 volunteer workers, and a budget of $320 million. He's known for his proactive financial strategy, which has guided Sterling Heights through rough economic times to economic growth and enhanced recreational amenities. The community's success, said Vanderpool, is owed to informed, innovative, and ethical leadership, which he plans to promote within the MME. The MME itself is an affiliate of the International City/County Management Association (ICMA).
