In the early hours of the storm, a bald eagle nest at Lake Natoma was damaged when the supporting tree fell, likely due to strong wind and rain. FOLFAN, a local wildlife non-profit, reported the incident and noted the condition of the eagles, known as “Mama and Papa,” in a statement obtained by KCRA 3.
Both eagles have been accounted for, with Papa seen flying near the fallen nest. Kathy Kayner, a lead docent with FOLFAN, told ABC10, “At this point, anything can happen,” regarding the future of the nest.
FOLFAN hopes the eagles will remain near Lake Natoma and rebuild their nest. Jim Cassio, president of FOLFAN, told KCRA 3 that experts estimate the rebuilding may take four to seven days.
Locals who have followed Mama and Papa since 2017 are watching closely as the eagles rebuild their nest. While rebuilding within a week is expected, the timing of egg-laying remains a concern. Kayner told ABC10 that no eggs were present when the nest collapsed, reducing potential impact on the eagles’ breeding cycle.
