A chaotic sequence of events unfolded in the Frankford neighborhood of Philadelphia on Friday, starting with a woman being carjacked at gunpoint and culminating in the theft of a Philadelphia police vehicle by the same suspect. NBC10 reports that the incident began near Race and Robinson streets around 6:30 p.m. when a 21-year-old man allegedly robbed a woman of her car, armed with a firearm.
Officers tracked the stolen car using OnStar. According to 6abc, the carjacking victim had safely exited her vehicle when the suspect sped away. A police helicopter assisted officers as they pursued the suspect.
The suspect continued to evade authorities, crashing the stolen car at Frankford and Adams avenues. Inspector D.F. Pace told CBS News Philadelphia that the suspect then ran on foot, entered an unattended police cruiser, and drove away.
Officers located the stolen police cruiser in a driveway on the 900 block of Arrott Street. After a brief foot chase, the suspect abandoned the car and hid behind homes. Police report that no one was injured during the incident.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, faces multiple charges. Officials are still searching for the gun used in the initial carjacking. The victim and officers were unharmed, and two vehicles—a personal car and a police cruiser—were left at the scene.
