A high-speed chase culminating in a dramatic crash unfolded in the San Fernando Valley recently, landing a suspected DUI driver behind bars. According to KTLA, the pursuit initiated out of Reseda just around 9:20 p.m. Monday.
The suspect, alleged to be under the influence and potentially armed, led law enforcement on a chase that reached speeds of up to 95 miles per hour on surface streets, sometimes with the headlights turned off, KTLA reported. California Highway Patrol took the lead around 9:40 p.m., according to ABC7, before LAPD reassumed control as the pursuit returned to local roads.
Erratic driving behaviors characterized the chase, including maneuvers on the wrong side of the road, running red lights, and attempting U-turns around other vehicles at intersections to shake pursuing officers. Precisely 40 minutes into the chase, at the intersection of Corbin Avenue and Saticoy Street, the suspect's vehicle spun out and crashed into a light pole, ending the dangerous escapade. Retrieving him from the crashed vehicle, which had become entangled under a tree, officers took the man into custody. Remarkably, no civilians or officers were reported injured, noted KTLA.
In a statement obtained by CBS News, the Los Angeles Police Department described how the suspect swerved through traffic on Balboa Boulevard in Encino at roughly 80 mph before merging onto the northbound 101 Freeway. After the crash, a firearm was reportedly recovered from the suspect's car, as per ABC7's reporting.
The chase and its conclusion were covered live, with Sky5 and AIR7 providing aerial footage from overhead. Following the incident, investigations are ongoing, and charges are likely to follow for the individual, who has not yet been identified by name.
