The Tampa Bay area is bracing for an unusual cold snap, with the National Weather Service issuing a Cold Weather Advisory that remains in effect until 9 AM EST this morning. The advisory warns of "very cold wind chills as low as 27," posing a risk for those venturing outdoors without proper protection. According to NWS Tampa, a second advisory will follow, starting from midnight tonight and lasting until 9 AM EST Thursday, with similarly low wind chills expected to reach 28 degrees.
The advisories encompass several counties including Coastal Charlotte, Coastal Lee, Inland Lee, Coastal Hillsborough, Coastal Manatee, Coastal Sarasota, and Pinellas. For people in these areas, the chilly conditions carries the risk of hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Local residents are advised to wear appropriate clothing, including a hat and gloves, while taking extra care to ensure pets are kept indoors as much as possible during these conditions.
As the cold front moves through the region, the temperature is forecasted to plummet, especially during the night. The forecast for today promises sunny skies with a high near 67, but with wind chill values as low as 35 early in the morning. The weather is expected to moderate slightly with mostly clear skies and a low around 45 tonight.
The fluctuating conditions anticipate a 40 percent chance of showers on Friday night, and the weekend won't offer much reprieve with "breezy" descriptors tagging the forecast. It's advised that residents should stay tuned to local forecasts and heed any directions provided by authorities, especially as conditions change. Very cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure, and the community should be vigilant about the risks during this period.
