The Tampa Bay area is bracing for a wave of cold weather, with the National Weather Service issuing a Cold Weather Advisory through Wednesday morning. With temperatures expected to reach near-record lows, residents are urged to use caution outdoors and dress warmly.
The weather advisory, which began shortly after midnight, warns of very cold wind chills as low as 26°F and urges precautions to prevent hypothermia. Residents are advised to dress in layers to stay warm while allowing for comfortable movement.
Coastal counties are also facing a high risk of rip currents through Tuesday evening. The National Weather Service warns that rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers into deeper water. Beachgoers are advised to swim near lifeguards and, if caught in a rip current, to stay calm and float rather than swim against it.
Pet owners are advised to keep animals indoors during the cold snap. Residents should also check on older family, friends, and neighbors to ensure their safety. Authorities remind the public to use portable heaters safely and never operate generators or grills indoors due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
As the region gears up for a chilly end to January, the cold front is expected to bring clear skies but low temperatures hovering in the 30s overnight. Daytime highs will remain brisk, with Wednesday peaking near 60 degrees and sunny, according to the forecast. Residents should prepare for a continued pattern of sunny days, along with the need to stay adequately warm during this unusually cold Floridian winter.
