In Tampa, the city has broken ground on new infill homes as part of its effort to expand affordable housing. Twenty lots have been allocated to local developers, including minority- and family-owned businesses, to build homes for income-eligible buyers. This marks the third phase of Tampa’s ongoing Infill Housing Program.

The developers received the lots with the agreement that the homes they build will be sold only to qualified buyers. According to the City of Tampa, eight developers in this phase plan to construct townhome-style residences, which could add up to 45 units. The initiative aims to help address challenges in a housing market where the median home price is around $420,000.

Mayor Jane Castor noted that Tampa’s latest affordable housing initiative is intended to provide homes for qualified buyers and support the local construction industry. The city’s Infill Housing Program also involves partnerships with local businesses. Abbye Feeley, administrator of Development and Economic Opportunity, said the program is one of several efforts to help local families access affordable housing. Developers are selected through a random lottery process to provide a fair opportunity for all applicants.
