Austin-based Terry Black’s Barbecue is officially rolling into New Braunfels, taking over the long-empty former Los Cucos spot at 1310 E. Common St. Plans call for a multi-level smokehouse with an attached pit house and a two-story outdoor dining setup, with the company eyeing a late-summer 2026 debut.
Permits, cost, and schedule
A state project filing pegs the work as roughly a $5 million renovation, with construction slated to run from Jan. 1 through Aug. 31, 2026. The documents list an overall footprint of about 8,649 square feet, including a 7,860-square-foot dining area, along with an attached pit house and upgraded ADA parking, according to Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
Local reporting and timeline
The company’s internal timeline reads a little differently from the state paperwork. Scott Wieland, senior vice president of development and construction for Black Family Hospitality, told Community Impact that crews expect to start work in mid-February, with the restaurant anticipated to open in August. That report also notes the building’s previous life as Los Cucos Mexican Cafe, which shut down abruptly in April 2024.
Menu and brand plans
The New Braunfels Terry Black’s is expected to serve the brand’s classic Central Texas staples: slow-smoked brisket, bone-in beef ribs, pork ribs, sausage and familiar sides. The restaurant will operate under the Black Family Hospitality umbrella. The company’s website lists its Texas locations, highlights additional expansion into San Antonio, Houston and Nashville, and underscores consistency as a key priority, according to Terry Black’s Barbecue.
What to expect next
With permits filed and the interior being stripped, on-site activity is expected to ramp up in the coming weeks as the buildout progresses. Residents and job-seekers can keep an eye on state filings and local coverage for construction milestones and hiring updates, which outlets such as MySA have been following.
