Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has claimed a legal victory over the City of San Antonio after the city used funds to help women obtain out-of-state abortions. The city had set up a $100,000 Reproductive Justice Fund for this purpose, according to a press release from the Attorney General’s Office.
Attorney General Paxton, who opposed the initiative, said the use of taxpayer funds for out-of-state abortions is illegal. Following the passage of Senate Bill 33, which bans such spending, the city was required to end the program.
Paxton’s actions led the city to end funding for out-of-state abortions. Senate Bill 33, which bans the use of taxpayer dollars for abortion-related expenses, provided the legal basis for the decision.
The city’s Reproductive Justice Fund has been discontinued following Paxton’s legal challenge. The ruling reinforces Texas law prohibiting the use of public funds for abortion-related expenses, according to the Attorney General’s Office.
