Texas Governor Greg Abbott called for the prompt extradition of Reynaldo Mata-Rios, the main suspect in the murder of Texas Facilities Commissioner Eddy Betancourt, the Texas government’s official website reports. Mata-Rios, believed to be in Mexico, is wanted in connection with the killing last Saturday.
Abbott emphasized a tough stance against crimes targeting Texans, calling for international cooperation to bring the alleged murderer to justice. According to the Office of the Texas Governor website, He referenced a similar challenge faced nearly 150 years ago by Governor Coke, stating, "Those who harm Texans must not be allowed to flee ‘across the Rio Grande’ and from there ‘taunt and defy the citizens of Texas.’"
The governor extended his condolences to Commissioner Betancourt’s family, calling him a patriot with integrity and professionalism. He also expressed concern over cross-border justice and the handling of fugitives by neighboring nations.
Abbott emphasized that the Mexican government must cooperate with the U.S. and not provide sanctuary to those accused of serious crimes, stating that if it wishes to be deemed a friendly power, it must refuse to be a refuge for those who murder Texans and ensure they face due process and the consequences of their actions.
